Chapter Fifteen
Dr. Crossman pointed to Dean and I and snapped her fingers. âYou two, with us, now.â
Emma looked up, her face streaked with make-up blackened tears.
âWhat about Emma?â I asked.
âShe'll be going with them,â Mr. Crossman said, indicating the agents waiting around us.
Emma tensed, begging me with her eyes, and I tightened my hand on her shoulder. I shook my head.
Dr. Crossman pinched the bridge of her nose. âShe will be fine, I promise. I don't know what kind of impression you have of our organization that has led to this mess, but the agents here were only ever intended to bring her into protective custody, and would have done a much cleaner job of it than the drama you presented the convention with earlier.â
âBut you said neutralize. I heard you.â
Dr. Crossman squinted as though confused before seeming to remember. âWell, congratulations on your excellent hearing, but you took that completely out of context. Now let's get you home before your parents find out and blame all of this on us.â
I let go of Emma and stood up. She sat up and hugged herself. I felt bad leaving her there, but I tried to trust the Crossmans, and hoped they no longer had a reason to take things any further.
âThis way,â Mr. Crossman said.
Dean got up too and pointed the other way. âMy bike is out the front.â
âThe agents will make sure itâs returned to you.â
We didnât argue anymore; it wasnât worth it. We followed them out and across the street to another building. It was a hotel, and I watched as one of the suited agents used their powers of suggestion to have hotel staff allow us all up to the helipad on the roof without an eyelid batted.
As we rode the elevator, Dr. Crossman said, âWe seem to have had something of a miscommunication. Or a number of them. But I thought Iâd been clear on telling you not to get involved again. Like we donât have enough to worry about right now with Ash missing.â
I hung my head, ashamed of the mess Iâd caused. âIâm really sorry I lied. And that I thought you were going to kill Emma. They were really only ever going to bring her in?â
âOf course.â Dr. Crossman sighed.
âAnd not hurt her? Even though you thought sheâd refused to co-operate?â
âThey would have used whatever force was necessary,â Mr. Crossman admitted.
I nodded. I knew it could have gone worse for Emma if I had left things as they were. âSheâs going to be okay though now, right? With those agents?â
The elevator dinged and the doors opened to a windy rooftop. The sun was low across the city, glaring off shiny skyscrapers. A slim, matt-black helicopter sat still before us.
Dr. Crossman patted my shoulder in a stilted attempt to be comforting. âNow we know she was never against the idea of joining Limbus, Emma stands a better position than when we thought otherwise. Lying to us was a mistake, but youâve proved youâre a good person with how you reacted to what you thought was going to happen.
